About

Nurse Ann

Hi, I'm Ann. I'm a registered nurse. I spent my career in emergency and critical care, then in functional medicine clinics. The hospital showed me what happens when health problems go unnoticed for a decade. Functional medicine showed me how much of that was catchable, and how much of the wellness industry is selling fear and $80 powders. Self Care Club lives in between.

Here's the moment that made me start this. Before procedures, I ask patients how their kidneys are doing, and the answer is almost always "fine, I think? My doctor hasn't mentioned anything." That's not fine. That's just nothing caught yet. The average primary care visit is 12 minutes, and the system it belongs to is reactive by design. So knowing your baselines, watching your trends, asking for the right tests, that was always going to be your job. Nobody tells you that out loud. Consider yourself told.

Self Care Club is everything that doesn't fit in those 12 minutes.

One more thing, because it shapes everything here. I track my biomarkers, wear the ring to bed, and put sleep at the top of my entire health hierarchy. I also stay out too late with my friends sometimes, drink a martini when the feeling strikes, and have been known to eat pizza at 2am. I don't think those cancel each other out, and neither should you. I optimize so I can afford to be human. This is not the don't-eat-after-6pm club.

When I'm not working shifts or writing this, I'm in Venice Beach cooking or hanging out with my cat, who has never once tracked a biomarker and is doing fine.

What I'll always do here: tell you what the evidence actually says, including when it's boring or mixed. I'm not asking you to trust me. I'm asking you to read the study, and I'll hand it to you.

This isn't about being perfect or overhauling your life. It's small, consistent, mostly free things that compound. Welcome to the club.
